Nutrition: The Missing Company Puzzle Piece
September 7, 2021

Nutrition in the workplace is often considered the last puzzle piece to a company plan. However, optimizing workplace nutrition is beneficial in improving employee wellbeing and business outcomes, and should become a core piece of the corporate puzzle.

Office Workplace Nutrition Tips

There is a growing awareness that workplace nutrition plays an essential role in the physical and mental wellbeing of your employees, where increasing nutritional intake benefits both the employees and the business.

Research within the nutrition industry has found eating foods with limited nutritional value raises the risk of low productivity or presenteeism. This is compounded by other studies that have shown greater nutrition results in increased energy and reduced fatigue helping to improve efficiency. In addition to employees feeling more physically productive when fueled with nutritious foods, studies have suggested that increased nutrition can positively impact on mental health.

Through ensuring employees are fueling themselves with nutritional foods, companies can maximize productivity and performance. When considering the business case for investing in your employee's nutrition, increases in productivity helps to reduce staffing costs and improve profitability.

How does this work in practice?

Of course, all company cultures are different so one approach does not fit all when introducing a new concept for employees. However, we have some suggestions that could work for you.

Provide nutritious food to your employees

When organizing food for office events or meetings, best practice is to ensure the food is packed with nutrients. Offering salads with leafy greens is desirable as they have prominent levels of folic acid, which can help to regulate mood neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Another great option to offer is whole grain foods due to the levels of B vitamins within the food that can help to regulate mood and relax the brain. This will help to set staff up for a productive day whilst providing tasty and nutritious food.

Hold a nutrition week

A good opportunity within this week to boost nutritional food consumption at work could include team cooking classes and challenges. This helps to educate employees in a fun way, with some delicious food after. Lots of companies have ambassadors that champion wellness initiatives, who can help to send out information and plan any events.

Educate your employees

Through collaborating remotely with professionals in nutrition, your company could hold virtual events to discuss nutritional foods and their benefits. This helps to open a discussion about nutrition where employees can learn and ask questions, whilst building a healthy workplace culture.
