What led you to join the apprentice scheme at Cubic?
I didn’t like school as I was learning information that I just was not interested in. An apprenticeship let me learn something that I was interested in whilst earning money, which sounded amazing. I knew I didn’t want to go to university and I learnt about apprenticeships through my family recommending it to me. I actually applied for this job instead of going through a training provider as I knew what I wanted to do.
What were your expectations when you started the scheme? What were you hoping to learn? I was hoping to learn a coding language and expand what I knew about the IT industry whilst also learning how to deal with live data, and use systems to edit and fix this live data, which I am now in the process of understanding.
Has the scheme allowed you to develop your skills and improve your knowledge of the industry? Yes I now know how the IT industry works. I know how to use ISS and how to set up a DNS entry as well as using SQL to make reports and how to use SQL to build invoices that are built using Crystal.
Has the scheme helped to shape your career aspirations or decide on your next steps? I am still deciding what field of work I would like to go into within IT. Coding looks interesting but so does data analytics as well as infrastructure. So at the moment I am looking to learn some more code in my own time as well as server set ups to help me decide what I want to do going forward. This scheme has helped me know that I want to work in IT as that is what I enjoy.
What are you hoping to do next?
As I said above I am looking at 3 main areas to try and get involved in:
Coding
Data Analytics
Infrastructure
These all look interesting to me and would love to do them all but I would like to be specialised in one thing for the moment and then learn other skills as I go along.
