Life as a Cubic Apprentice: Zach Bateman

Celebrating National Apprentice Week

Zach has worked with Cubic as a Software Support Consultant for 1 year 7 months, and would recommend it thoroughly.

What led you to join the scheme?
I came out of school knowing that I wanted to do IT but didn’t necessarily already have the qualifications to be able to just jump straight into a job. Therefore Cubic opened that doorway for me into IT.

What were your expectations when you started the scheme? What were you hoping to learn? I went into the apprenticeship fairly open minded, with no real idea of which direction I wanted to go in. Cubic allowed me to have a look into a bunch of different departments that interested me, and then I was able to see which one I wanted to do.

Did you have any reservations about becoming an apprentice? Would you now recommend it to others? I would always recommend an apprenticeship to anyone, especially students coming out of school as sometimes university is seen as the only way to go, but it really isn’t.

What has been your most memorable experience so far? Or your biggest learning? Learning SQL was a big step for me, as I always saw learning a programming language as an impossible task. After getting a huge amount of help from my colleagues and being able to put my learning into practice in the workplace, it became much easier for me to learn.

What kind of things have you been working on while at Cubic?
I have mainly been working on my SQL skills, as this is what I have been interested in from the beginning. However, aside from my IT skills, it has also helped me develop my people skills.

Has the scheme allowed you to develop your skills and improve your knowledge of the industry? Absolutely! Learning SQL has opened so many doors for me, and has allowed me to be a useful member of the team.

Has the scheme helped to shape your career aspirations or decide on your next steps? Coming into the apprenticeship I had no idea what I wanted to do, and Cubic have given me stepping stones to be able to develop and grow as the years go on.

What are you hoping to do next?
Once I finished my apprenticeship, 2 months later I was enrolled on a level 4 data analyst course, meaning I can keep progressing my knowledge, and keep increasing my role at Cubic.
