The John Morden Centre in London won the 2023 Riba Stirling Prize for being an exceptional retirement day care facility.
Our client, Mæ Architects, created the innovative centre using sustainable materials, which sets new standards in social healthcare quality.
The John Morden Centre is a new addition to the historic Morden College. It beat five other contenders, including A House for Artists and the University of Warwick's Faculty of Arts. Morden College is a residential and nursing site for the elderly, with a long history dating back to the 17th Century. The centre was designed by the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren.
The John Morden Centre is an ensemble of red brick "pavilions," creatively linked by a central timber "cloister." It offers residents an array of amenities, promoting social interactions and, subsequently, healthier, longer lives.
Mæ's founding director, Alex Ely, described the project as 'fulfilling' and a beacon of hope for the adult social care sector. The Riba Stirling Prize jury praised the John Morden Centre. They described it as a happy and inspiring place. The design of the centre helps people feel connected and less lonely.
The design includes features for the elderly, like hidden handrails, built-in seats, and floor patterns that assist dementia patients. The project also embraces "biophilic design," seamlessly connecting with the natural environment, exemplified by a majestic cedar tree at its heart.
Rapport3 extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mæ Architects for this outstanding accomplishment.
