Preparing for a summer of high temperature heatwaves

According to the Met Office's predictions, 2023 is expected to have higher temperatures compared to 2022.

Forecasts indicate that the global temperature is expected to be at least 1C above the average for the 10th consecutive year. The Met Office stated that the natural weather cycle, which includes the cooling impact of La Niña (cooling weather pattern), is likely to come to an end after a three-year period.

What can we do to protect ourselves from heatwaves?

According to the British Architect, Susan Roaf there are some ways we can reduce peak temperatures at the hottest time of year.

Shade and Ventilate

Install external shutters or shades on the south and west-facing kitchen windows to provide shade for the house's walls and windows. Making systematic and minor improvements can significantly impact indoor temperatures. Nevertheless, additional measures may be necessary during heatwaves.

Use Fans

Do not forget to use fans! They’re not only environmentally more friendly compared to air condition but they can also provide a cooling effect!

Only air-condition where and when necessary

Consider utilizing Personal Comfort Systems (PCSs) that are available in your local area. For instance, you could use a small air conditioning unit in the room where you are working, similar to how people use small, efficient heaters in the warmest room of the house during winter instead of using the central heating. Focus on cooling the person rather than the entire building.
