Sponsoring the Seventh Engineering Sketches Prize

Cubic are excited to be sponsoring the seventh Engineering Sketches Prize, run by the Engineering Club, launching on 8th October and running through to the exciting prize-giving and exhibition event on 15th November. We have a strong affiliation with the event due to Cubic’s Director, Duncan Hartop, having worked with Mark Whitby, founder of the Engineering Club, previously in his role at Whitby Bird Engineers.

“I worked with Mark at Whitby Bird from 1995. It was a fantastic place to work, with Mark Whitby being such an inspirational character. This was the perfect reason to get involved in the Engineering Club.” - Duncan Hartop, Director

With all 3 founders of Cubic from an AEC background, the competition is very relevant to the Rapport3 software that Cubic provides, which is configured and updated specifically to support and improve the processes of architecture, engineering and construction firms. Many clients that use Cubic’s Rapport3 and Gekko software are also members of the Engineering Club, including Haworth Tompkins, Knight Architects, Robert Bird Group and expedition.

The Engineering Sketches Prize is a fantastic opportunity to explore examples of hand-drawing techniques to communicate designs and ideas in engineering.

“I have been impressed how the Whitby Bird Foundation encourages engineers and designers to get away from their computers, and to brainstorm ideas and sketches on paper. Although when I first started working nobody had a computer at their desk, nowadays it is such a relief to stop staring at a screen and let your creativity run free.” - Duncan Hartop, Director

The Engineering Sketches Prize supports Cubic’s ethos on encouraging young engineers and architects, and brings together a range of passionate people in the industry, owners of firms ranging from global to local, to network with and get inspired. A number of members from the Cubic team will be attending the launch event, on 8th October , and the prize-giving on 15th November 2018 , which will involve a drinks reception and a short presentation by a guest speaker. We can’t wait to see competition kick off!

The Prize is open to employees of Engineering Club members and other engineering firms both in the UK and overseas, with an additional Student Prize available for each category.

Why not get involved?

The Competition The competition is free to enter and the judges will award two main prizes:

  2. Process Sketch, or group of sketches: showing how the germ of an idea is worked through to produce a conclusive construction brief.

  3. The Detail Sketch - showing the explanation of a detailed engineering solution in the design office or on site.

  4. Historical Studies - record the engineering aspects of an existing building, object, system or mechanism.

  5. Digital Sketching - a new category for sketches in all the categories above but originating as a hand drawn sketch on a digital device or tablet.
